Bright Horizons at 24 St Swithin Nursery in Aberdeen, has been shortlisted for the ‘Eco-Friendly Early Years Award’ with Nursery World recognising the nursery’s various green initiatives.
24 St Swithin is one of only four nurseries to make this category shortlist as one of the finalists in the Nursery World 2024 Awards. These prestigious awards are open to everyone involved in childcare and education and highlight truly inspirational work.
The nursery, led by manager Helen, has encouraged children, families, and their community to take an eco-friendlier approach at home through their different sustainability initiatives which offers individuals valuable learning.
The award recognises 24 St Swithin for their environmentally friendly activities such as planting a Queen’s Green Oak tree, in partnership with the local council, at the Queens Terrace Gardens. They also took part in the ‘Litter League’ where the children went litter picking in the area to keep it clean. The nursery has developed strong collaborations with businesses in their community, such as another notable initiative led by 24 St Swithin is their partnership with a local care home, where children planted herbs, fruits, and vegetables for the elderly residents.
Some other activities the nursery is involved in which teaches children the importance of our environment and how we can protect it includes growing plants in their garden area, reducing their use of electricity, litter picking and reducing food waste. The also organise regular visits from a local beekeeper to teach the children the importance of bees and what we can do to support biodiversity.
Helen, Nursery Manager at Bright Horizons St Swithin Nursery said: “It’s a wonderful achievement for our colleagues and children at 24 St Swithin to be recognised for our hard work in working towards protecting our environment and showing our passions for sustainability. As part of our nursery’s Nurture Approach, it is so important to us that we guide and support the next generation to have a mindset that considers the environment when making choices.
“Initiatives we’re involved in such as the Eco-Schools Green Flag and It’s Your Neighbourhood in Scotland consist of powerful agendas which can make a positive impact on the environment we live in. We look forward to continuing working closely with parents and building strong community connections to help make our planet a more eco-friendly place.”
